Due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus, it becomes a necessity to wear a mask everyday when we head out, and because of that, has caused many skin problems.
While wearing a mask, the moisture (droplets when we speak, etc), as well as heat, will be trapped inside. As our skin is normally exposed, wearing a mask makes our skin uncomfortable. Besides, it will also cause abrasion on areas where our skin comes in contact with the mask. These factors will not only increase our skin oil, but also accelerates the inflammatory response. Worse of all, it may also result to an outbreak of acne, pimple, or eczema.
So, how to prevent these mask-type skin issues?
Fresh, Soothing and Hygienic
When you know that you have to wear a mask later, the maintenance steps in the morning should be more refreshing than usual.
For example, if you usually use cream, you will have to change to a refreshing lotion. Alternatively, if you use a refreshing lotion, it is more advisable to use essence/serum.
As face mask has the ability to trap moisture and heat inside, certain heavy moisturising products will be unnecessary . Instead, the products you use should be more refreshing.
Do not apply sunscreen on mask area
There is no need to apply sunscreen on area covered by the mask; the UV will not be able to reach there anyway. It will only become an additional burden to your skin. This also includes foundations, makeups, etc.
Pay attention when going out
You should avoid talking when wearing a mask because when you are talking, the moisture (which causes humidity) and heat will be trapped, and may also leave bacteria on our masks. If you let the saliva stick to the surface of the mask all day, it will cause inflammation. So remember! If you want to reduce inflammation, talk less with a mask!
Also, you should reduce strenuous activities such as running, as sweating may cause allergic reactions and irritation.
Choosing the right mask
If you usually have acne problem, we will suggest you to use surgery mask.
To reduce skin problems, look for masks that offer the following:
►A snug, but comfortable fit
►Soft, natural, and breathable fabric, such as cotton
►Fabric on the inside that feels soft if you have sensitive skin
►Cotton material inside if you have acne or oily skin
A snug, comfortable fit also reduces skin problems. If the mask feels too tight or slides around on your face, it can irritate your skin. You’re also more likely to adjust a poorly fitting mask. When you touch your mask, you can transfer germs to your mask and your face.
The fabric is also important. Avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, polyester, and rayon. These are more likely to irritate your skin and cause breakouts. .
Wash your face immediately when you reach home
You should quickly wash your face immediately when you reach home to remove the saliva, sweat, bacteria and oil.
Take a 15-minute mask break every 4 hours.
Health care workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic have found that this helps save their skin. Of course, only remove your mask when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands.
Safe places to remove your mask include:
* Outdoors, when you can stay at least six feet away from people
* Inside your car when you’re alone
* At home
Wash your cloth masks
Many health care organizations now recommend that you wash a cloth mask after each use. Washing it also removes oils and skin cells that collect inside the mask, which could lead to a skin problem.
You can wash a cloth mask in a washing machine or by hand. Both ways remove germs and other particles. Just be sure to:
* Follow the washing instructions on each mask.
* Wash the masks in hot water unless the instructions say otherwise.
* Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent.
After washing your mask, check its shape. If a mask no longer fits snugly (and comfortably), it is less protective.
