Alright our half-grown humans, this article is for you. Let’s talk about skincare tips for teenagers. When you are going through puberty, your hormones are raging, and so are your acnes. Plenty of changes are going on to your body and skin, and sometimes finding the right solution(s) can can be very confusing and difficult. No worries! We asked our Chief Aesthetic Trainer, Tiffany Tan, for her top 5 skincare tips for teenagers so that you don’t have to.

1. Cleanse First, Thank Us Later

School’s out and so are you, right? All you want to do is sleep because school can be that tiring. BUT, cleanse first! You do not want to add more causation for acne, as if hormonal acne isn’t enough.

Find a cleanser that is specifically designed for your skin type so that you do not run into the risk of having to compromise your skin barrier. If you have dry skin, cleanser your face twice a day with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser. If your skin is dry enough, you can even get away with just washing your face with a cleanser at night. If you have oily skin, you might want to consider a cleanser that has salicylic acid in it so that you can gently, yet effectively, cleanser your pores.

2. Ex-foliate

Teenage heartbreak can be tough. Been there, done that. Treat your dead skin like an ex, cleanse that -ish away!

Exfoliating is important when it comes to making sure that you do not risk getting acne because of clogged pores. However, make sure that you do not over-exfoliate because over-exfoliation can be even more damaging to your skin! Exfoliating once a week with a gently exfoliator (like salicylic acid), and make sure to moisturise after.

3. Moisturise

Moisturise your skin. Yes, even for our oily skin Ollies out there. No matter your skin type, you need to moisturise. Moisturising properly will ensure that your skin is well hydrated and doesn’t produce excessive sebum. Excessive production of sebum can be a big problem because it can lead to the development of acne.

Use a moisturiser that is suitable for your skin type. If you have dry skin, you might want to find a cream moisturiser that is thick enough to lock in hydration and moisture in your skin. If you have oily, acne-prone skin, you might want to skip the creams and use a gel moisturiser instead.

4. SUN PROTECTION

Surely if something is written it caps it is THAT important, right? RIGHT. Sun protection is very important. We have said it a hundred times, but we will say it again: sun protection is crucial. UV damage from the sun can cause bigger problems than just taking a toll on your beauty. The sun can cause cancer. Click here to find out more about why you need to wear your sunscreen NOW.

5. Hands Off!

We know you are staring at that zit, tempted to pick it. But hands off! As tempting as it may seem, popping a zit can cause an infection and worsening of your acne. Picking at your pimples can also cause other areas to develop acne too if you accidentally come into contact with other areas of your face with pus from the infected pore.

Instead, what you can do is use a spot treatment like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or even a pimple patch. If you are struggling with acne that is going out of hand, please visit a board certified dermatologist or a doctor to get prescribe with the right topical and/or oral medication to treat your condition.
